  PHASE V - The Beat of Life
M Lesson V-1: What's So Important about the Circulatory System?
  V-1. Students will draw and label a health status continuum.
  V-2. Students will identify cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death in the United States.
  V-3. Students will identify lifestyle habits that can have lasting effects on heart health.
  V-4. Students will recognize the importance of the heart and circulatory system.
M Lesson V-2: The Circulatory System
  V-5. Students will describe the parts and functions of the circulatory system.
  V-6. Students will explain the functions and characteristics of arteries, veins, and capillaries.
  V-7. Students will illustrate the flow of the blood throughout the body.
M Lesson V-3: The Heart
  V-8. Students will describe the location, size, and shape of their own heart.
  V-9. Students will identify what the heart does and how the heart works.
  V-10. Students will recognize the valves in the heart and explain their significance.
M Lesson V-4: Blood Flow through the Heart
  V-11. Students will identify the heart's major structures and their functions.
  V-12. Students will describe the route the blood takes as it travels through the heart.
M Lesson V-5: Pulse and Blood Pressure
  V-13. Students will define pulse and blood pressure.
  V-14. Students will locate their pulse at several pulse points and determine their pulse rates.
  V-15. Students will describe how blood pressure is measured.
M Lesson V-6: Cardiovascular Disease
  V-16. Students will identify some of the most common cardiovascular diseases.
  V-17. Students will name causes of cardiovascular disease.
  V-18. Students will identify reliable sources of information and care for heart and circulatory system problems.
M Lesson V-7: Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease
  V-19. Students will discuss risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases.
  V-20. Students will examine a family history to see if it contains risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
  V-21. Students will apply what they have learned about risk factors to develop a plan to prevent cardiovascular disease.
M Lesson V-8: Harmful Substances
  V-22. Students will identify substances people eat, drink, and breathe that may harm the circulatory system.
  V-23. Students will recognize the effects of tobacco and alcohol on the heart and circulatory system.
  V-24. Students will review the functions of the circulatory system.
M Lesson V-9: Heart Dissection
  V-25. Students will identify the structures and functions of the heart as presented during the dissection of a heart.
  V-26. Students will practice the procedures used to dissect an animal's heart.
