  PHASE IV - The Food–Health Connection
M Lesson IV-1: Building the Pyramid
  IV-1. Students will label five food groups on the food pyramid.
  IV-2. Students will explain the recommended number of servings for each food group.
  IV-3. Students will recognize appropriate serving sizes for each food group.
  IV-4. Students will describe at least one health benefit for each food group.
M Lesson IV-2: What's in a Serving?
  IV-5. Students will demonstrate measuring serving sizes of common foods from the five food groups.
  IV-6. Students will estimate the number of servings in various portions of food from the five food groups.
  IV-7. Students will demonstrate careful hand washing before handling food.
M Lesson IV-3: Avoiding the “Fat” Condition
  IV-8. Students will list health habits that reduce the risk of obesity.
  IV-9. Students will compare and contrast the fats, oils, and sweets contained in different snack foods.
  IV-10. Students will select examples of nutritious snack foods.
  IV-11. Students will compose a story applying their knowledge of eating habits that promote health and avoid obesity.
M Lesson IV-4: Food Safety
  IV-12. Students will explain how food can cause illness.
  IV-13. Students will describe the effects of hot and cold temperature on bacteria.
  IV-14. Students will list foods from the five food groups that should be kept cold.
  IV-15. Students will describe ways to prevent food borne illness.
M Lesson IV-5: Taking Care of My Teeth
  IV-16. Students will identify foods that promote dental health and will explain why these foods help keep teeth healthy.
  IV-17. Students will describe ways they can take care of their teeth.
  IV-18. Students will demonstrate effective tooth brushing and flossing.
M Lesson IV-6: Where Digestion Starts
  IV-19. Students will label the four kinds of teeth and describe their functions.
  IV-20. Students will describe the anatomy of a tooth and identify where tooth decay and plaque are most likely to occur.
  IV-21. Students will list the possible effects tobacco use may have on the teeth and mouth.
M Lesson IV-7: Digestion Overview
  IV-22. Students will describe the structure and functions of the digestive system.
  IV-23. Students will predict the outcomes of chemical and mechanical digestion.
M Lesson IV-8: Digestive Tract
  IV-24. Students will break the digestive system into a series of tubes and glands.
  IV-25. Students will outline the functions of the organs of the digestive tract.
M Lesson IV-9: Glands of the Digestive System
  IV-26. Students will explain the functions of glands in digestion.
  IV-27. Students will decide how they will care for the health of their digestive systems.
  IV-28. Students will clarify how drug abuse affects the digestive system.
M Lesson IV-10: First Aid for Choking
  IV-29. Students will list situations in which choking might occur.
  IV-30. Students will demonstrate the technique for first aid for choking.
