Student Learning Objectives

Lesson 1: Is It Worth the Risk?

The students will:
  • Examine their opinions regarding gambling

  • Evaluate the validity of their opinions given the facts on gambling.
  • Identify the laws and legal issues related to gambling.
  • Analyze student and adult perceptions of gambling issues.

Lesson 2: What's the Message?

The students will:
  • Identify and analyze the influences that encourage or discourage gambling.

  • Examine how gambling promoters entice individuals to begin or continue gambling.
  • Analyze the media messages related to gambling.
  • Recognize who makes money when gambling.

Lesson 3: So What's the Harm?

The students will:
  • Examine the characteristics of different types of gamblers.

  • Assess the risks for individuals in gambling situations.
  • Examine the reasons some people choose to gamble.
  • Recognize the characteristics of problem and compulsive gamblers.
  • Recognize the relationship between gambling and other risk behaviors.

Lesson 4: The Bad News and the Good News

The students will:
  • Recognize that winning at most gambling games depends on chance.

  • Summarize the phases a compulsive gambler experiences.
  • Review the warning signs of problem or compulsive gamblers.
  • Assess their own behavior related to gambling.
  • Identify where and how to get help for individuals who experience negative consequences due to gambling.
  • Practice ways to communicate concern regarding someone's gambling behavior.

Lesson 5: Media Blitz

The students will:
  • Examine ways to increase teen awareness of the issues related to gambling.

  • Create a school media campaign to inform peers about the dangers of gambling.
