Student Learning Objectives

Lesson 1: The Power Is Yours!

The students will:
  • Analyze how tobacco use and exposure negatively impacts the user, friends, family members, and community members.

  • Evaluate environment and social factors, especially advertising strategies, which may influence young people to use tobacco.

Lesson 2: Be Influenced-In a Positive Way-To Make Positive Decisions

The students will:
  • Analyze how tobacco use and exposure negatively impacts the user, friends, family members, and community members.

  • Evaluate environment and social factors, especially advertising strategies, which may influence young people to use tobacco.

Lesson 3: Protect Yourself and Others From Risk - Part 1

The students will:
  • Recognize risky situations that may lead to trouble, so that one can protect oneself and others from tobacco use.

  • Apply problem-solving skills to hypothetical situations to protect oneself and others from tobacco.

Lesson 4: Protect Yourself and Others from Risk - Part 2

The students will:
  • Demonstrate effective refusal skills to counter pressure to use tobacco.

  • Demonstrate skills to avoid hazards due to another person's use of tobacco.

Lesson 5: Resources to Help Self and Others

The students will:
  • Locate resources in one's school and community, and on the Internet, for information and assistance regarding tobacco, and assess the validity of the resources.

  • Demonstrate ways to support people who are abstaining from and/or trying to quit using tobacco.

Lesson 6:  The Power to Be Tobacco Free

The students will:
  • Describe a variety of needs young people may have, explain healthy ways to meet these needs without using tobacco and make personal commitment to remain tobacco free.

  • Compose persuasive advice for peers on how to stay tobacco free.
