Student Learning Objectives

Lesson 1: Killer on the Loose

The students will:
  • Identify the cause of death for thousands of people each year.

  • Examine clues to explore the ways people are exposed to tobacco.
  • Review information on tobacco.

Lesson 2: Tobacco Aliases

The students will:
  • Identify facts about tobacco that incriminate it for harming and killing people.

  • Present tobacco-related information to classmates.
  • Recognize the dangers of using tobacco in any form.
  • State personal reasons for not using tobacco.

Lesson 3: Interviewing Witnesses to the Crime

The students will:
  • Identify ways tobacco use and exposure to tobacco affects the user, friends, family members, and community members.

  • Explain some of the legal, social, financial, and health issues related to tobacco use.
  • Share tobacco-related issues with peers by conducting interviews.

The students will:
  • Evaluate the gimmicks advertisers use to sell tobacco.

  • Use advertising gimmicks to sell a “no use” message.
  • Review effective refusal skills.
  • Prepare effective refusals to counter peer pressure to use tobacco.

Lesson 6:  Remove the Mystery of Tobacco Use:  Getting the Word Out

The students will:
  • Use advertising strategies to promote abstinence from tobacco use.

  • Promote abstinence from tobacco products as the norm.
  • Communicate support for peers who do not use tobacco.
  • Communicate support for people who are trying to quit tobacco use.

The students will:
  • Demonstrate ways to support people who are abstaining from tobacco use and those who are trying to quit tobacco use.

  • Create strategies for avoiding secondhand smoke.
