Student Learning Objectives

Lesson 1: The Food Groups Revisited

The students will:
  • Identify foods, the recommended amounts to be eaten, and the benefits of eating foods from each of the food groups.

  • Explore terminology and recommendations of MyPyramid and the 2005 Dietary Guidelines.
  • Evaluate a typical day’s food intake for the presence of the food groups and recommended amounts to be eaten.

Lesson 2: Nutrition Think Tanks

The students will:
  • Examine selling points to determine whether they are likely to influence food choices. 

  • Investigate information on the food groups and physical activity.

Lesson 3: Good Nutrition Sells

The students will:
  • Apply knowledge of health benefits and other characteristics of food groups and physical activity to influence food and activity choices.

  • Decide which selling points are most likely to influence personal selection of foods from each of the food groups and types physical activity. 
  • Select new foods from each of the food groups to add to personal diets.
  • Select new activities to add to personal daily physical activity.

Lesson 4: Unlocking the Secrets of Food Labels

The students will:
  • Interpret the nutrition information available on the Nutrition Facts panel of food labels.

  • Use nutrition information to differentiate between foods that are nutrient dense and foods that are low in nutrients.

Lesson 5: Advertising Claims

The students will:
  • Recommend foods for specific dietary goals by using the nutrition information available on food labels.

  • Recognize common health claims on food packages and in advertisements.
  • Predict the meanings of health claims on food packages.
  • Distinguish which are accurate health claims on food packages and advertisements in order to identify foods that have the most nutritional value.

Lesson 6: Have a Healthy Body Image

The students will:

  • Recognize the range of healthy body types.

  • Summarize the factors that determine body weight.

  • Formulate guidelines for eating to share with peers.

Lesson 7: Fast Food Survival

The students will:

  • Evaluate guidelines for healthy, fast-food eating.

  • Identify healthier food choices to make when eating at fast food restaurants.

Lesson 8: Nutrition at School

The students will:

  • Investigate the availability of nutritious foods in the school cafeteria.   

  • Identify the availability of appealing, nutritionally balanced meals in the school cafeteria and ways to change personal choices to improve eating habits in the cafeteria.

  • Identify changes to make to improve personal eating habits and physical activity.
