Michigan Model
for Health®:
Revisions in Progress Review of the Draft Lessons Once the lessons were drafted, a review process was implemented by MDE and MDCH. Members of the expert content groups volunteered to be a part of the review along with other content experts. MDE staff, MDCH staff, State Steering Committee, Comprehensive School Health Coordinators, and interested teachers also had the opportunity to review the draft lessons. In
March of 2006, a group of fourth and fifth grade teachers piloted the draft
lessons and materials in their classrooms. The feedback from that pilot was
collected in April and the lessons were revised where possible in response to
teachers' suggestions. Those final curricula will then move on to MDE and MDCH
for official sign-off, making them certified Michigan Model products and ready
for production/publication. The format of the lessons changed. The Educational Materials Center (EMC) worked with the writers to create a teaching-friendly format that includes icons to designate worksheets, teacher suggestions, extension activities, and so on. A table format is now used to allow the experienced teacher to skim the outline of a lesson and a teacher who is teaching it for the first time to use a column that provides a more detailed explanation. Puberty, reproductive health and HIV/STI lessons are or will be offered as supplements due to the need for advisory committee recommendations and board of education approval. The HIV/STI lessons were revised along with each respective grade level revision. The reproductive health lessons are still pending. |
