The Michigan Model® has been acclaimed as one of the best health curricula in the nation. Given the recognition it has received, the teacher feedback indicating that many lessons are effective with students, and limited funding, existing lessons will be used as a foundation.

The following criteria will be used to determine whether or not an existing lesson or activities and materials will be utilized.

  • Use the existing activities when:
    - The teachers rate the lesson favorably.
    - There is a “match” between the new objectives and the old objectives or
       activities.
    - There are materials in the lesson teachers enjoy using or indicate that
       students find them engaging.

  • Create activities when:
    - The existing activity or lesson does not meet the new objective(s).
    - The “matching” activity or lesson was rated as ineffective by teachers.
    - The new configuration of objectives and lessons makes use of the existing
lessons cumbersome, time-consuming, or ineffective from an instructional
       point of view.

  • When using or replacing lessons:
    - Maintain and incorporate existing materials whenever possible if they are
       accurate and up-to-date.
    - Add new materials where a lesson or activity warrants the cost.
    - Use minimal new videos and other high-cost items.

Lesson objectives will be correlated to the Michigan Health Education Standards and assessment items will be added.
