Michigan Model Program Evaluation Results

Evaluation

A variety of different tools are being used by local school districts in the state of Michigan to evaluate the Michigan Model®.  To view some sample data summaries resulting from this process, click here.

A pre and post test developed by the Michigan Office of Drug Control Policy is one such tool being used locally in Michigan.  Choose the grade level below to view pdf files of these tests.

Sample results of some local school district evaluation of the Michigan Model®

Schools are identified by letter only to protect the privacy of local data.  Schools featured are from a variety of different districts in different geographic regions of the State of Michigan.

Elementary School  A:  Results of paired sample T-Tests for Elementary School Instrument showed statistically significant positive trends in attitude toward use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs, gang involvement, violence and dealing with strong feelings.

Elementary School B:
Violence/ students changed both their attitudes and behavior regarding violence. In the span of the school year's instruction, the pre to post test scored for attitudes changed 35.3% while their behaviors showed 37.1% changed.

General Student Behavior: Student's responses changed most after instruction in this area as the findings showed a 51.7% change.

Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs: Students responses in the area were not as dramatic as there was only a 21.0% overall change in attitudes toward alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and only a 7.7% overall change in behavior. These findings reinforce the notion that students who are not using would not have as great a behavioral change in a risk area that they are not involved.  The large attitude change percentage is hopeful that students might not begin using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in the first place.

1.) Behaviors: there was a 12.5% change in alcohol, 4.4% change in tobacco and 2.7% change in drugs.
2.) Attitudes: there was a 22% change in alcohol, 22% change in tobacco and 20.0% change in drugs.

High School C's second dataset show that in both the pre-test and post-test, students have desirable attitudes and behaviors for alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and violence.  Furthermore, it is important to note that all statistically significant mean differences were in the positive direction.

Middle School D data show that in both the pre-test and post-test, students have desirable attitudes and behaviors for alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and violence.  Furthermore, means show significant change in the positive direction from the pre-test to the post-test.  With the increased concern about school violence, it is important to note that the majority of the statistically significant mean differences in the positive direction are for violence-related questions.

Middle Schools E-H:
Each implementing teacher conducted a student pre and a post test and kept an evaluation log of the modules.  The questions on the pre/post test were pulled from a large middle school ATOD and violence student survey used in these and other participating middle schools.
Each school experienced some positive changes from pre-test to post-test.
