EMC Wins National Health Information Award

Two videos produced by the Educational Materials Center have been awarded the National Health Information SILVER Award. This award honors the nation's best consumer health information programs and materials and is presented by CareWise, Inc. and American Custom Publishing Corporation.

“U neeD 2 Kno” and “The Stories of AIDS” were both developed in association with the Michigan Department of Education to meet the needs of high school and community educators of HIV, AIDS and other STDs.

U neeD 2 Kno

“U neeD 2 Kno” is a compelling 10 minute video that encourages teens who have engaged in risky sexual behavior to be tested for HIV and other STDs. The video features both HIV positive and negative young people who care about health and realize the importance of getting tested. Also highlighted is Dr. Kathryn Wright, who specializes in treating adolescents living with HIV. The video focuses on who should consider testing, what it's like to get tested, and where teens can call to get more information about testing in their area. The fast-paced, contemporary format makes the message even more powerful for teens.

This video is designed to motivate teenagers and should be used in conjunction with other educational materials that provide basic information about HIV/STD testing and treatment.

The Stories of AIDS

In addition to the new testing video, the EMC is getting great reviews for “The Stories of AIDS.” This title has been in circulation for about a year and is both current and compelling. Telling the stories of their lives and their involvement with HIV/AIDS, Edy and Linda--one at a time--relate the changes the virus has made in their lives. This powerful video, in two stand-alone segments, tells of the differences between HIV and AIDS, the effect of each on a specific individual, and the plea to young people to avoid exposure to the virus.
