Access to a variety of nutritious and appealing meals that accommodate the health and nutrition needs of all students. School nutrition programs reflect the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans and other criteria to achieve nutrition integrity. The school nutrition services offer students a learning laboratory for classroom nutrition and health education, and serve as a resource for linkages with nutrition-related community services. Qualified child nutrition professionals provide these services.
Michigan Model for Comprehensive School Health Education®
Offering nutritious and appealing meals supports the students decision to make healthy food choices. Students learn about food groups, nutrients and the importance healthy eating in the Michigan Model for Comprehensive School Health Education®. Nutrition lessons are a part of every grade level Teacher Manual for Grades K-6. To view the K-6 Scope and Sequence for Nutrition click here. Nutrition modules are also available for Grades 7-12. USDA's Team Nutrition is an integrated, behavior based, comprehensive plan
for promoting the nutritional health of the Nation's children. This plan
involves schools, parents, and the community in efforts to continuously improve
school meals, and to promote the health and education of 50 million school
children in more than 96,000 schools nationwide. For more information

Nutrition Tool Kit
The Nutrition Tool Kit is part of the Michigan
Action for Healthy Kids Coalition and focuses on implementing the Michigan State
Board of Education Nutrition Policy.

The Michigan Department of Education in cooperation with the Michigan
Department of Community Health, the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness,
Health and Sports, and the Michigan Fitness Foundation developed The Role of
Michigan Schools in Promoting Healthy Weight. The paper was developed
to be a working model to help administrators assess their school's environment
and to establish or review district guidelines and policies. It includes
tools to help create safe and supportive schools where students can be
physically active and benefit from a healthy nutritional environment. In
addition to prevention the paper includes guidelines for schools that want to
