Comparison of National and Michigan Content Standards for Health Education

National Content Standards were established in 1995 by the work of the Joint Committee on National Health Education Standards. The standards listed below are the draft 2006 Content Standards.

2006 Draft National Health Education Standards Michigan Health Education Standards
All students will:
1. comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention to enhance health.
2. analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors.
3. demonstrate the ability to access valid information and products and services to enhance health.
4. demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
5. demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
6. demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health
7. demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce risks
8 demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
All students will:
1. apply health promotion and disease prevention concepts and principles to personal, family, and community health issues
2. access valid health information and appropriate health promoting products and services
3. practice health enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks
4. analyze the influence of culture, media, technology on health
5. use goal-setting and decision-making skills to enhance health
6. demonstrate effective interpersonal communication and other social skills which enhance health
7. demonstrate advocacy skills for enhanced personal, family, and community health
