Performance Based Assessment Tools for assessing Michigan Model® Lessons

A major focus in national education reform has been on setting goals for students to be able to think critically, solve complex problems, communicate effectively, and locate and use new information in a rapidly changing world.  These are skills that not only help students achieve in the classroom, but help them in the workforce and in other important arenas of adult life.  The Michigan Health Education Standards and Benchmarks are built on a foundation of these skills.

In order to ensure that students develop the skills expressed in the Standards, educators must find ways to align curriculum and classroom instruction so that they work together to teach the skills.  Performance-based assessment can be a powerful tool for helping teachers do this.  What follows are sample assessment activities, based on activities already found in the Michigan Model for Comprehensive School Health Education.  These activities are linked to the Michigan Health Education Standards and Benchmarks, and will give you an idea about how to begin developing your own assessment activities that assess what students are able to do.
