In September 2003, Governor Jennifer
Granholm announced the beginning of a three year project to develop an
environmental education curriculum for Michigan middle schools. Since
then, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has worked with the
Department of Education toward the development and dissemination of
sound science-based supplementary environmental curriculum materials for
use by Michigan educators. The results of those efforts, and the
collaborative efforts of many other organizations, are now being
realized. The Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support (MEECS)
is currently being trained and implemented in Michigan classrooms.
The five unit topics covered by MEECS are
as follows:
Air Quality,
Energy Resources, and
Water Quality, focusing
on grades six through eight, and
Land Use, and
Ecosystems and
Biodiversity, focusing on grades 4-6. All units were developed to
support Michigan's curriculum framework and are aligned to the standards
and benchmarks. |
