MIOSHA Standard for Bloodborne Infectious Diseases

In accordance with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030 and the Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services Occupational Health Standards Part 554, Bloodborne Infectious Diseases, an employer who has any employees with occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious material must develop and implement an Exposure Control Plan to eliminate or minimize employee exposure.  These rules apply school districts.  The Michigan Standards and Rules have been amended twice--once in 1996 and again in June 2002 for effect on October 18, 2001. The following are key aspects of the Michigan Department of Consumer and Industry Services Bloodborne Infectious Disease Rules (Part 554):

  • Each school district must develop a written Exposure Control Plan;

  • The Exposure Control Plan must be reviewed annually and revised as necessary; and,

  • District employees that have a reasonable chance of blood exposure (Category A employees) must receive training and an annual refresher training

MIOSHA Bloodborne Infectious Diseases Online Training Program

This program is designed to provide an overview of the MIOSHA Part 554 Bloodborne Infectious Diseases Standard. This training program does NOT fulfill all the employee-training requirements described in the Bloodborne Standard nor is it intended to replace facility specific training.  It is designed as a "Train the Trainer" Program.
