Goals | Accomplishments | Photos | School Web Site |

Bendle High School is one of two small, urban high schools in the Michigan Model Partnership for Character Education.  Bendle High School is located in Burton, on the outskirts of  Flint, Michigan.  The principal is William Parish.

As one of four comprehensive sites, Bendle High School is addressing four key goals:

Promote positive school climate using the physical environment
Promote positive and mutually respectful relationships between staff and students.
Develop a school environment and community that builds on youth assets.
Promote leadership and responsibility among students and staff.

Accomplishments in 2001-2003:
1. Every ninth grade student received the Michigan Model character education curriculum, Building Character in Ourselves and Our School
2. Staff implemented a silent mentoring project, with a focus on those students who had the least amount of connectedness to the school.  All staff were involved in the project, each taking on one or more students with whom they connected in meaningful and simple ways on a daily basis.  The project was called “silent” because students were not told that they were being “mentored.”
3. Students and staff tended a courtyard, planting a variety of flora, building a fountain and pond with water plantings, unearthing a series of long-forgotten stepping stones, and maintaining the grounds.  The courtyard was designed to take advantage of the natural light for interior classrooms and as a living laboratory for the science classes.  It provides an outside area within the building allowing students to be outside while affording the staff a secure environment.
4. Two student-staff athletic events were organized to build relationships and respect between faculty and students
5. Faculty received staff development on the Search Institute’s developmental asset approach to youth development.
6. Students and staff conducted a canned food drive for the local food pantry.
7. Students collected and stored personal grooming items for students removed from their homes (distributed anonymously by the school.)
