Riverside Middle School first entered the
Michigan Model Partnership for Character Education under the leadership of
then-principal James Nicolette, and continues under the leadership of the
current principal, Michelle Ghareeb.
As one of the four
comprehensive school sites, Riverside Middle School is addressing six key
goals: |

Make
the Riverside Middle School building more responsive to students, staff,
parents and community needs |
 |
Involve
the students and the community to be more active in the life of the school |
 |
Improve
relationships among students, staff, parents, media and the community |
 |
Reduce
the barriers to learning for students at Riverside Middle School |
 |
Develop
strategies to improve the delivery of the character education curriculum |
 |
Create
a collaborative learning environment for students and families while
strengthening the K-12 community of schools of which Riverside Middle
School is a part (the Creston Family of Schools.) |

| Accomplishments
in 2001-2003: |
| 1. |
Every
seventh grade student received the Michigan Model character education
curriculum, Choosing Who I Am, Choosing Who I Become. |
| 2. |
Signs
to make the building more user friendly and character education banners
and posters have been hung throughout the school. |
| 3. |
A
Student Ambassadors program was launched, in which students provide
helpful guidance to new students and visitors to the building. |
| 4. |
A
Principal’s Cabinet has been established, composed of representative
students who provide input on the progress of the project. |
| 5. |
An
ABC award for students who show strides in Achievement, Behavior, and
Citizenship was established and two awards events were held. |
| 6. |
Parents
received information about the character education program materials at
the annual Open House. |
| 7. |
The
Creston Family of Schools, comprised of staff, parents, central office
administrators and local community representatives developed a logic model
and created a vision for a K-12 articulated character education program. |
| 8. |
Art
work was created by students on the theme “Excellence:
A Lifelong Goal” and was put on public display. |
